Revised Carbon Monoxide Code Now Includes Campus Buildings, Dorms

The 2009 edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s carbon monoxide code covers all types of educational facilities and spells out requirements for installing, testing and monitoring detection devices.

ODU Leaders to Add More Campus Security

A rise in violent crimes in neighborhoods around Old Dominion University (ODU) has prompted school leaders to pledge an "aggressively and jointly" attack on the problem. The call to action came after a non-student was shot on a street dominate by student renters.

Hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike Prompt Millions of Emergency Alerts in 2008 Storm Season

School safety officials sent more than 87 million alerts to residents, parents, students and staff during hurricanes Gustav, Hanna, Ike and Tropical Storm Fay, using Blackboard Connect, according to a Blackboard news release.

Higher Ed Opportunity Act Includes Whistleblower Protection

November 10,2008

College and university public safety officials should no longer fear they will suffer reprisals when they report that their campuses are not properly reporting crime. That’s because the Higher Education Act (HEA), signed into law by President Bush in August, now contains a whistleblower provision. Section 488(e)(3) of the HEA states no agent of a university will be able to threaten, coerce, intimidate or discriminate against someone who may have information on a particular incident on campus.

FIU EMCOP POLICY STATEMENT
Florida International University faces the risks and consequences of natural, technological and operational emergencies that may result in serious consequences for the University community. In preparation for such occurrences, FIU has developed an Emergency Management and Continuity of Operations Plan (EMCOP) that outlines minimum emergency procedures that are intended to accomplish the following:
  • Where possible, prevent disasters
  • When disasters can not be prevented, mitigate the impact on the University community resulting from such occurrences
  • Provide a safe environment for University faculty, staff, students and all those to whom we provide services
  • Provide for continuity of operations for essential functions
  • Provide for continuity of academic and research functions

Assuring the continuity of Florida International University is implicit in our mission and requires the cooperation and involvement of all University personnel. The FIU Emergency Management and Continuity of Operations Plan is based on the requirements of F.S. 252 and is fully supported by all members of the FIU Executive Committee and the Executive Council.
