General Guidelines

Emergency Information 24/7: (305) 348-HELP

  • Review the FIU EMCOP, hurricane plan available at www.fiuoem.com See Section IX.
  • Memorize the emergency management contact information: (305) 348- Help
  • Memorize the FIU Emergency website address: www.fiu911.org
  • Update your personal list of the phone numbers you will need in case an evacuation order is issued for the area or your dorm (arrangements for off-campus accommodations, out of state friends and family members, evacuation routes, travel arrangements, etc.)

Today:
Plan and prepare for “sheltering in place” or evacuation to the home of a friend or family member, or to a public shelter should a storm threaten to make landfall in the area. Click here for Miami-Dade Shelters or Broward County Shelters.

The evacuation trigger for students residing at the Biscayne Bay Campus will be determined by the Dade County Office of Emergency Management, which will advise the public when a hurricane threat to that area is imminent. The evacuation zone map shows that evacuation from the Biscayne Bay Campus is required for category II and higher hurricanes. Click here for the Evacuation Zone Map.

  • Make travel arrangements:
    • If you are driving, you should identify your routes, estimate your travel time and the logistics and safety resources you will need for your trip. You may also want to consider car-pooling with friends and/or roommates.
    • If you intend to fly, please bear in mind that airports will be crowded, may close, and may not reopen for some time after the hurricane event.
  • Identify an out-of-area point of contact that family and friends can call to find out about your evacuation plans.
  • Students residing at Biscayne Bay Campus, who do not evacuate to the homes of friends and family, or shelters managed by the American Red Cross will be relocated to group accommodation facilities at University Park Campus.

FIU Emergency Response Phase II: Critical Alert
When the FIU Department of Media Relations notifies the University community that FIU in on a “Critical Alert”, all students should do the following:

  • Back up personal computers
  • Confirm schedule regarding special projects and assignments that may require field work or travel to or from the affected areas
  • Assure personal preparedness kits and supplies are ready - Kit Contents
  • Check schedules for any special events on campus

FIU Emergency Response Phase III: Watch

  • Pack all important portable belongings for removal to approved safe areas
  • If necessary, move personal computers and other important equipment to protected areas
  • Move any remaining equipment/belongings off the floor
  • Cover remaining personal equipment/belongings and important files with plastic, such or garbage bags
  • Place all loose papers and important documents in drawers, cabinets or files
  • Leave campus as soon as possible after the Office of Media Relations advises that the University will “close” or residential facility evacuation order is issued
  • The FIU Parking and Traffic Department and the Public Safety Department have established procedures to ease traffic flow at the time of campus closing - please provide your full cooperation and patience. Also, do bear in mind that evacuees from Monroe County may be arriving on the campus at the same time that you may be leaving; therefore, it is absolutely important that you follow campus evacuation instructions to assure you are able to exit as soon as possible and avoid unnecessary delays

FIU Emergency Response Phase VI: Recovery
Please do not attempt to return to University premises until an official announcement instructs you to return. Listen to local radio and television stations, contact (305)-FIU-HELP, or access the FIU web sites at www.fiu.edu or www.fiu911.org for updates

Upon your return:

  • There may be some inconveniences as some University facilities and customary services may be temporarily unavailable
  • Evacuees from Monroe County may continue to need the safety and protection of our facilities and may be present in the Primera Casa Building , the Graham Center , the Recreation Building or Golden Panther Arena. Please afford them your consideration.
  • Some classes may be rescheduled – notices will be posted by entrances to the building in which your class was previously scheduled and elevators and similar locations on campus
  • Some special events may be cancelled or rescheduled
