NOAA Releases a Fact Sheet about the Hurricanes and the Current Oil Spill

NOAA released a factsheet yesterday indicating that oil released from the Deepwater Horizon incident would have minimal effect on a hurricane. They further stated that the effect on the oil slick would largely depend on the track of a potential hurricane.
FEMA Urges Residents To Get Ready For Hurricane Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With just over a month until the beginning of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season on June 1, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urges Americans to ensure their families, homes and businesses are prepared for the risks associated with hurricanes and tropical storms. Individuals and families are encouraged to have a family communications plan and get a kit with essential items like non-perishable food, bottled water, spare batteries, a can opener and specialty items like spare eyeglasses.

The National Hurricane Research Center will be hosting a Wall of Wind contest for high school students. The contest will allow students to test designs for mitigation of damage to models of structures built to scale.
It will take place at FIU's Engineering Center on May 19th at 8:00 AM

FIU College of Law trains and sends volunteers to help Haitians apply for protected status

Florida International University’s College of Law has partnered with two South Florida non-profit organizations to provide legal assistance to Haitians looking to file for temporary protected status (TPS).
Florida International University is issuing a call to students, faculty and staff to volunteer on Sunday to help sort and package relief supplies for Haiti. Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Miami-Dade County Warehouse at 11500 N.W. 25th Street in Doral.
The week of January 24-30 2010 has been proclaimed by Governor Charlie Crist as Severe Weather Awareness Week. In partnership with Florida’s Division of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service will issue a public information statement each day next week focusing on a specific weather hazard. Order Issued by Florida Governor Charlie Crist Due to Freezing Weather

Executive Order Number 10-01 was issued by Florida Governor Charlie Crist on January 5, 2010. He declared a state of emergency due to the threat of severe cold weather and to ensure timely precautions are taken to protect Florida’s agricultural crops and the general welfare of the State.
Florida International University Becomes a StormReady University

The National Weather Service has recognized Florida International University, as a StormReady university as a result of work done by the Office of Emergency Management and the FIU Police Department to meet the stringent requirements set forth by NOAA's National Weather Service.

CDC releases H1N1 Guidelines for Educational Institutions

The CDC has released a set of guidelines to help decrease the spread of flu among students, faculty, and staff of institutions of higher education (IHE) and post-secondary educational institutions during the 2009-2010 academic year.

FIU's Human Resources Department Releases Information Regarding H1N1 Policies for Faculty and Staff

EMCOP POLICY STATEMENT
Florida
International University faces the risks and consequences
of natural, technological and operational emergencies that
may result in serious consequences for the University community.
In preparation for such occurrences, FIU has developed an
Emergency Management and Continuity of Operations Plan (EMCOP)
that outlines minimum emergency procedures that are intended
to accomplish the following:
Where
possible, prevent disasters
When
disasters can not be prevented, mitigate the impact on
the University community resulting from such occurrences
Provide
a safe environment for University faculty, staff, students
and all those to whom we provide services
Provide
for continuity of operations for essential functions
Provide
for continuity of academic and research functions
Assuring
the continuity of Florida International University is implicit
in our mission and requires the cooperation and involvement
of all University personnel. The FIU Emergency Management
and Continuity of Operations Plan is based on the requirements
of F.S. 252 and is fully supported by all members of the
FIU Executive Committee and the Executive Council.
